What is a growth hacker?
Growth hackers are a specific type of marketer, they work mainly with businesses that need growth. This can be a start-up that wants to scale or a venture for a more established enterprise. Growth hacking is not new. It’s just a new term. Although the term was only recently coined by Sean Ellis, I’ve been doing this since 1997 – with my first eCommerce company Peepers, Inc. As the head of marketing and technology, I helped this 13 year old business Peeper grow by 100% in the first year, and 150% in the second year. Shortly after, Peepers was listed in the Inc. 500 list of fastest growing companies in the country.
What does a growth hacker do?
A growth hacker merges science (this can be in the form of data mining or programming skills) with creativity to achieve growth through unconventional marketing initiatives. Although the role is mostly associated with start-ups looking to acquire users or customers for their product, it can also be applied to enterprises looking to scale a new venture, or revitalize stagnant growth.
How can I work with a growth hacker?
First and foremost I urge you to try and identify the right candidate internally. Your future growth hacker could be right under your nose. Look for someone who knows how to mine big data, draw insights from the data, and is comfortable working with unknowns. At the heart of it, a growth hacker is a calculated risk taker. I work with your company to identify opportunities by digging into the data, understating the big picture and implementing product specific tactics to help you achieve your growth driven goals.
